Shane Karan works on his 'Reach For The Moons' in the tie-breaker for the Expert Division.

Under beautiful blue skies and gentle breezes, Delaware hosted one of the region’s largest yo-yo contests on Saturday, September 18. Over 50 players came from seven states to compete. Delaware players from Reboboth Beach to Wilmington (including the current state champion) competed in the event. Three members of Team High Performance arrived wearing their distinctive Teal Jerseys. The highlight of the day were the tense tie-breakers following the Expert Division. Shane Karan, Young Choe and Brian Dam all completed all the required tricks perfectly and moved on to the tie-breakers. Young dropped out first, leaving Karan and Dam to complete Warp Drive/Time Warp combination, 20 Reach for the Moons, 20 Planet Hops, 20 Punching Bags, 40 Reach For the Moons, 40 Planet Hops, 40 Punching Bags, and finally Dam completed 60 Reach For the Moons to take the championship when Karan completed only 15. These are difficult tricks to land once, much less 60 straight repetitions!!

Jesse Reim (left) of Collingswood, New Jersey took home the top honors and a 'Killer Bee' from Proyo, in the Freestyle division. The Freestyle division features yo-yo players performing for three minutes to music of their choice. The players are free to do anything they wish, with no required tricks. The winners are determined through scoring based on number of tricks performed, difficulty of tricks performed as well as style. Jesse performed a spirited routine. Playing his yo-yo off, through and around his ‘Jitter Rings’ as well as performing off-the-string tricks. Off-the-string tricks feature the yo-yo completely detached from the string. The string is wound around the yo-yo and once spun, the yo-yo spins freely. Jesse caught the yo-yo and flung it high in the air, catching it back on the string. Brian Dam came in second and Shane Karan came in third. Shane’s routine incorporated his coming down off the stage and giving his mom a peck on the cheek mid-trick!
